CHIAROSCURO
"A great personality always brings something to a piece that musical notes and symbols cannot express. Looking forward to the premiere of Chiaroscuro by Gidon Kremer in Brussels and Paris, I was convinced that I was once again waiting to engage with this mystery, which I never cease to admire. After all, great personalities with unique talent, become co-authors of the works they perform."
I wrote these words in anticipation of the world premiere. Now, that the concerts have taken place, I have a desire to rearrange the accents as the real author of this work was Gidon Kremer, and I feel like a happy co-author.
As always, a wonderful orchestra Kremerata Baltica has surpassed all my expectations.
EPYPHANY is dedicated to the PeterisVasks' close friend, soul mate and masterly interpreter of Vasks' work, the Finnish conductor, Juha Kangas on the occasion of his 65th birthday. The world premiere was in the summer of 2011 in Kokkola.
"...our composer Pēteris Vasks is the envy of his colleagues, contemporary composers. He doesn't aspire to spectacular innovation nor impressive complex intellectual constructions in new music; he can afford to write simply, truthfully, with emotion, from the heart.
Furthermore, he does it in his native language - in a clearly audible Latvian intonation, with a Latvian folksong./../ He plays on, as opposed to playing with, the strings of the soul, mindful of how old fashioned and banal that may seem today - to simply open our hearts", wrote the newspaper Diena music critic Inese Lūsiņa.
The articulation and atmosphere of Epiphany is very similar to one of Vasks' much earlier opuses - Musica Dolorosa (1984) for a string ensemble, which has been one of the cornerstones of Kremerarata Baltica's repertoire for over 15 years.
An epiphany is not only a literary genre, brought to life so eloquently by Imants Ziedonis, but also the Star of Bethlehem in the Gospel, which showed the way to hope.
FRAGMENTS OF TARGET (2011) is a work made from the material for the more than 80-minute soundtrack of the film Target (directed by Alexander Zeldovich, screenplay by Vladimir Sorokin). It's a cinema-utopia where the action takes place in Russia in 2020. The authors paint a picture in which Chinese cultural expansion at this point has reached such a significant degree, that the distinct "chinoiserie" taste in music pervades the film. There are five parts to the suite: January Vivaldi, Cadence, Horse Racing, Tannhauser, Foxtrot. Target Fragments is dedicated to my dear friends - Gidon Kremer and the Kremerata Baltica Chamber Orchestra musicians - and written in commemoration of their joint 65+15 year anniversary.
LUKAS GENIUŠAS was born in 1990 in Moscow, into a family of musicians.
